Description of project

The Kingsville Community Centre's primary objective is to address "Social Engagement and Inclusion".

According to Stats Canada, 2011 Census, there are more than 112,000 seniors over the age of 50 residing in Essex County, of those approximately 37,000 are over the age of 65. The Town of Kingsville current population is made up of 50% seniors over the age of 50. Our service reach includes the towns of Kingsville, Leamington, Cottam, Harrow, Oxley and Ruthven. Kingsville Community Centre is a centralized location where individuals can receive help, encouragement, direction and guidance along with the experience of enjoying social activities, health education and services.

The Kingsville Community Centre serves the social participation and inclusion needs of this growing population, in the Kingsville and surrounding communities of Essex County.

We believe that with the reduction of social isolation - deemed to be the absence of social interactions, contacts and relationships with family and friends, with neighbors on an individual level, and with society at large, will result in an overall increased quality of life.

The Kingsville Community Centre delivers the following FREE programs:

•Recreational programming is developed, in consultation with attendees. All of our activities support a "neighbor helping neighbor" attitude and our events and services change regularly according to new interests.

•Overall Health, Prescription and Medication Strategies, delivered in partnership with Community Health professionals and agencies. Our services include Reflexology, monthly Pharmacist led information sessions, blood pressure testing, diabetic teaching, and healthy living nutrition tips.

•Exercise programs and Fall Prevention Strategies (Essentrics, Tai Chi) are delivered by a certified instructors.

•Social Activities and services within a large facility host numerous social opportunities including an inviting Café, crafts (knitting, plastic bag crafts, rescue dog toys), games, Sewing with Betty, Workshop, Community Garden, monthly Café Luncheon and Hospice Coffee House.

•Education programming includes computer classes, elementary/secondary student tutoring, guitar lessons, horticulture tips, car maintenance, and canine /toddler integration training.

•Counselling Services offered by trained and experienced professionals-Addiction, Grief and Family

Volunteering has been identified as one of the key factors in the reduction of social isolation and depression in seniors. Kingsville Community Centre is eager to encourage individuals to utilize their enthusiasm, gifts and talents to enhance the lives of others in your community. Consider volunteering for the Community garden, workshop, monthly cafe luncheons, or start a new program/service.
